No fun concerts happening at SPAC (Saratoga performing arts center) the week you're in Saratoga? Never fear, another option exists. Little known to most people is that the summer home of the New York City Ballet lies in beautiful Saratoga.
Tickets to see the talented ballerinas are much cheaper than usual, as it is the summer season. Unfortunately, many people pass by this opportunity. The NYCB seasons have been getting increasingly shorter, due to underfunding and lack of audience members. Attendance rates of the dance performances have decreased in the last few years, and now an age old Saratoga tradition is threatening to disappear. What used to be a month long residency has been shortened to little more than two weeks, then just one week of performances for the dancers, something that has devastated both the performers and loyal state go-ers.
To preserve this unique performance-viewing opportunity, the word needs to be spread about the wonderful ballets that are put on every summer at SPAC. People come from near and far for musicians, why can't the same migration occur for dance?
Underappreciation of this difficult art has occurred because of the low attendance of such stunning performances. With a fun outdoor setting, a night at the ballet offers a high-class summer outing for just about anybody. It isn't hard to be awestruck at the talent the NYCB always produces. With men leaping to astonishing heights and women performing incredible feats on pointe shoes, it is impossible to understand why more people are not dying to see the ballet.
To compensate for a such a short residency in the 2013 season, the NYCB is planning on bringing in another dance company to fill the time slot, however this second company will be a much cheaper option. Many loyal fans of the ballet are unhappy with the stiuation. Hopefully, the art of ballet can begin to make a comeback in the modern art world. This world renowned company and its talent will hopefully never be cut completely from their summer home in Saratoga springs.
