A still from a Popular Harlem Shake video
Looking for the next funny video trend on youtube? Look no further than the Harlem Shake. These 30-35 second youtube videos could definitley be the weirdest trend yet. Each of the videos begin with one individual wearing a
mask/helmet. The individual is either standing alone in a room or with others who are nonchalantly watching TV or talking. The person wearing the helmet then starts dancing when you hear "Con las terroristas" in the music. And when I say dancing, I mean doing bizarre movements like pelvic thrusting, jumping up and
down, and strange arm flapping. The movements differ from video to video.
This individual dance party lasts about 15 seconds, or until you hear
"Now do the harlem shake" in which the beat drops and the video becomes even weirder! Either new individuals jump into the dance party, or those that were casually relaxing in the room start doing their own weird moves. To enhance the idea that everyone in the video has gone crazy, many people choose to wear outrageous costumes, walk on their hands, and stand on tables. I have seen only 2 or 3 really funny videos, it is hard to do since the idea has been repeated so many times. Sometimes, the more people that join in, the funnier it is.
Despite the excessive costumery and creativity people exhibit while
filming these short dance parties, the harlem shake videos get very repetitive. How do I know this? Simply search "harlem shake" on youtube and you get 149,000 results. The song used in the videos is #1 on Itunes right now too. Some people are already over the trend, while others continue to make videos.
Because the videos are so short and need little planning, they are easy and fun to film. Though chances are your Harlem shake video wont get 20 million hits, if your ever bored feel free to make one for fun! All you need are costumes, a camera, and a few friends. Might as well enjoy the latest trend before it dies out!
